“I long to take a deep breath of fresh air through my nose”

When sinus is congested is can cause discomfort and even some irritability, especially in smaller children and babies who are trying to bottle or breast feed and cannot breath properly through their nose. Children in school, who are currently wearing masks can find it even more difficult. Masks and lack of fresh clean air travelling through the nostrils can promote and increase bacteria, contributing to greater congestion.

Symptoms of Sinus Congestion or Infection Include:

  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Post Nasal Drip Mucous dripping down the back of the throat
  • Hawking mucous in the Morning
  • Mucous in the throat as soon as you get some fresh air
  • Cough – caused by Post Nasal Drip
  • Runny nose, feeling like you need to blow your nose, but nothing comes out
  • Headache or Migraine
  • Facial pain under the eyes
  • Tooth Pain that reoccurs, with no indication of tooth decay or cavity
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose when having a procedure carried out at the dentists or during an exam

Environment and Sinus Congestion

With sinus problems the first area we look at is our every day environment.

Sinus Irritation & Strong Smells

Is there enough fresh air circulating?
If working from home or from an office can you get out for fresh air more often?
If you are a smoker, can you cut down?
Are you drinking enough water during the day?
Are you spending a lot of time around toxins in the room you are in?
Is there something in your room at night that is toxic? Mold? Heating? Lack of Ventilation?
Is your washing detergent scented and too strong for your children?
Have you changed the Air Filter in your Car?
Are you using a diffuser or burning candles which are emitting toxins?

I suggest you look at all of these areas and be very conscious as to what can be contributing to sinus congestion or infections.
If you are using a diffuser, scented candles, incense sticks, I suggest you contact a qualified aromatherapist to have an oil blend and candles made specifically for you or your family.
My favorite candles and blends are made by Angela Doyle holistic, and made from organic ingredients. You may also benefit from her  Bugs Be Gone Diffuser Blend.

Nutrition and Sinus Congestion

Nutrition is often overlooked when it comes to relieving sinus congestion.  But it is one of the most important areas.

Sinus Congestion Sinus Infection & FoodIncorrect food choices can really encourage sinus congestion.  A lot of people with sinus issues find dairy can be a trigger.  As a Nutritional Therapist and Homeopath I have to ask – Why?  This is an area I would look closely at with you to try to solve the sensitivity to dairy.

Dairy can trigger a high histamine response, which can look a little like an allergy reaction or hayfever.  Hayfever or allergy reactions often cause runny or congested nose.  If the nasal passage is not allowed to clear the mucous can dry up, clogging and congestion the sinus.  Nasal sprays can be purchased over the counter, and other medicines, which dry up the mucous.  But when the mucous dries up it gets clogged.  Often during a Nutritional and Homeopathy program clients tell me they have a total release of a huge amount of mucous from the nose and sinus.  So if you are thinking of using one of these products do understand they are not solving the issue, but may be causing other long term problems.

Other foods and food products can cause similar reactions.  It is a matter of identifying what your trigger is, why it is happening, and how to solve it.

The digestive system can sometimes become a little overloaded with toxins, or just a clogged up and may need a little help.  If our food is not digesting properly it may cause clogging in areas like the liver, gallbladder, intestines, colon which need a little help.  Looking at food choices and digestion is often the way to find relief in sinus congestion.

When I say “food choices” I am also referring to the choice of using organic and non-toxic foods AND substances instead of processed foods and mass produced substances.  Toxins both in foods and products seep into the digestive system, and into the skin and can contribute to a congestion in sinus.

Was there a cold, flu or other viral infection prior to or during the sinus congestion?

Is this congestion – a lot of build up or obstruction in the sinus? Or is it an infection?

Homeopathy for sinus congestion and infection is very effective.  Most remedies for sinus infection can be found in the Helios basic 36 Homeopathic Kit.  Lycopodium, Pulsatilla, Belladonna, Bryonia, Ignatia.  Hepar Sulph, Merc Viv, Silica Kali Bich, Carbo Veg, Nux Vomica and in some cases Lachesis are also remedies that may help depending on the symptoms.

Signs of a Sinus Infection

A sinus infection, sinusitis, can have symptoms of sinus congestion, but more severe. There is usually pain around the face, cheeks, eyes, forehead or head. There can also be swelling around the eyes, head, or forehead. It is important where there is severe swelling or pain to have this checked out by a general practitioner or at an emergency department to rule out other more severe causes.

Homeopathy for sinus infection should normally start by using Hepar Sulph, Merc Viv or Sol, or in some cases Pulsatilla, Silica or Bryonia. In the case of sinus infection I do recommend you get advice from your qualified Homeopath, as choosing the incorrect remedy can worsen symptoms in some cases.

If the sinus congestion, inflammation or infection is a chronic condition, meaning it happens more than a once off every couple of years, I recommend you book an appointment with me or your local therapist to find the root cause and put a plan together to stop the sinus problem and prevent reoccurrence.
