What is Stomach Acid?

Stomach Acid is a liquid acid which is formed inside the stomach. This acid, in perfect conditions stays inside the stomach and does not come back up towards the throat. This acid is necessary to break down foods ingested. Stomach Acid also helps break down harmful bacteria so could be considered a protective barrier to bacteria, viruses and other harmful substances that we might ingest.
Hyperchlorhydria is a condition of having excess Stomach acid. People can experience low stomach acid when they believe their stomach acid is too high. Low Stomach acid is common in people over the age of 40 because stomach acid naturally decreases as we age. Infact, in some people from the age of 30, stomach acid can be half the amount it was compared to teenage years.

What does Low Stomach Acid Mean for Me?

A decreased amount of stomach acid reduces the absorption and of nutrients and minerals from foods ingested, B12, Calcium, iron, poor protein absorption. Over time this contributes to long term conditions like anemia, osteoporosis, malnutrition, and in some cases chronic fatigue and allergic type reactions to foods.
It is the acidity in our stomach acid that then produces a cascade like effect on the rest of the digestive system, including the pancreatic enzymes, which help break down fat, protein and carbohydrate foods. With modern diets rich in all of these, we can now see how one little part of the digestive system plays a huge role in our overall health.

How do I check my Stomach Acid Levels?

There is a very simple at home test you can take in your own time to check your stomach acid levels.Stomach Acid Test
Here is how:

  1. Do this test on an empty stomach.  First thing in the morning is a good time – have your ingredients ready the night before!
  2. Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda in 120 mls of water.
  3. Drink on an empty stomach
  4. Sit down for 15 minutes and relax
  5. During this time think about a food that you enjoy until your mouth starts to water.  Wait 15 minutes.
  6. If you burp within the 15 minutes you have sufficient stomach acid
  7. If you do not burp during this time your stomach acid is low, and you may be experiencing some of the symptoms above.

There is also a marker on general blood tests that your GP does regularly, so you can also check with your GP the next time you are in with them to see if there is an indication of low stomach acid on your blood tests.
